Jared J. Janke, DVM, DACVIM, LA
Dr. Jared J. Janke, a native of Madison, South Dakota, graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in May of 2004. Dr. Janke received a Bachelor's Degree of Science from South Dakota State University in May of 2000. He minored in chemistry. During a three-year residency program at Texas A&M University through the College of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Janke recieved extensive training in large animal internal medicine. He also spent a year at Southwest Equine Medical Surgical Center in Scottsdale, Arizona as a practicing Equine Intern Clinician. Dr. Janke is a board-certified Equine Internal Medicine Specialist with a special interest in ultrasonography and endoscopy.

Jason C. Mez DVM Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Large Animal Advanced surgical care for large animals
Dr. Jason C. Mez, a native of southeast Nebraska, grew up in a small farming community. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska. In 1996, he graduated from Kansas State University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. After moving to Mobridge, South Dakota, Dr. Mez spent two years in a mixed animal practice concentrating on equine and bovine work. He then worked in Belle Fourche for six years where he concentrated on equine practice. In 2007, Dr. Mez returned to school and completed a three-year equine surgery residency at Texas A&M University. The program and instructors at Texas A&M are world renowned in the performance horse industry. He learned and performed several hundred specialized surgeries such as colic surgery, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, fracture repair, laryngeal surgery, cryptorchid surgery, and dental surgery. In addition, he has had extensive training in equine lameness evaluation and diagnostic imaging. The author of a textbook chapter, Dr. Mez has also been published in scientific journals. He has presented several topics to practicing veterinarians at continuing education meetings. Dr. Mez joined the Sturgis Equine Clinic in August of 2007, and passed the surgery board examinations in February of 2008. He has a special interest in equine orthopedic surgery, arthroscopy, and lameness issues.

Larry Carpenter DVM
Dr. Carpenter is a native of Western South Dakota. He earned his Veterinary Degree from Iowa State University in 1982. He completed a 3-year Residency in Small Animal Surgery at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 1991. Dr. Carpenter holds a Masters Degree in Veterinary Surgery and was certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Small Animal Surgical Specialist in 1992. Dr. Carpenter served in the US Army Veterinary Corps for 25 years before returning to South Dakota to establish Veterinary Surgical Service in Sturgis in 2003. During his military career Dr. Carpenter attained the rank of Colonel and was the Director of the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Veterinary Service. In that capacity he was the head of Clinical Services for our nation's canine soldiers at the Military Working Dog Hospital - a part of the DOD Dog Training Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas. Dr. Carpenter has authored several scientific papers and presented numerous continuing education courses for practicing veterinarians.

Veterinary Technicians:
Monica Janes, RVT- a native of Columbus, OH, Monica has an AAS degree in Veterinary Technology from Bel-Rea Institute in Denver, CO and an AAS degree in Paralegal from Columbus State. She previously worked as an administrative assistant in Colorado and Ohio. She enjoys knitting, gardening and spending time with her Chihuahuas - Ella and Lulu.
Amberleigh Hoots, RVT- moved to Rapid City from Killdeer, North Dakota. Her passion for animals from a very early age has led her to attaining a Baccalaureate in Equine Management in the spring of 2005 at NAU. Shortly thereafter, she continued her education and received an Associates Degree as a Veterinary Technician and is currently Board certified. Amber's outstanding equestrian skills have allowed her to partake in some highly renowned horse programs in our area. Furthermore, she has participated as a wrangler in several local film productions. We are excited to add Amber's exceptional talents and great personality to our hospital staff.
Amanda Uhlmann, RVT - Graduated from NDSU in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Technology with minors in equine study and large animal technology. After having served her internship here at the Equine Center she returned to a full time position following graduation. She has always had a special place in her heart for animals, but has a special interest in equine medicine. Amanda originated from a small town in Minnesota but currently lives near Sturgis with Shep her dog and numerous cats and horses. She loves spending time in the Black Hills to enjoy all of the activities such as hiking, hunting and horseback riding.
Tiffiany Anderson, RVT
Bonnie Ismay, ASCP, certified MT- a native of Collbran, CO, has a BS degree in Microbiology from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. She has been at Sturgis Veterinary Hospital since 1975 where she has been an anesthetist, a surgical assistant and laboratory manager. She is also a charter member of the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians.
Office Manager:
Sharry Bennett - Sharry joined the staff of Sturgis Veterinary Hospital in January 2006 as Bookkeeper. She brings many years of bookkeeping experience with her. In 2007, Sharry was made Office Manager and continues as bookkeeper. She enjoys spiritual activities, gardening, hiking, bird watching and spending time with family and friends.
Receptionists:
Birgit Perkins - an Alaska native, joined our staff in 2005. She performs a variety of tasks including inventory control, ordering manager, lab assistant and receptionist.
Lucy Cummings -Originally from Amersfoort, Holland and moved to the Black Hills area in 1990. She has worked as a veterinary receptionist for more than ten years and has enjoyed the opportunity to be a team member at the Equine Center and Veterinary Hospital since April 2007.
Laurel Turbiville - an area native, joined the staff in 2011. She was involved in livestock production in Harding County for many years and volunteered as an EMT and the 4-H Horse Project County Leader. In her free time she enjoys hiking in the Black Hills with her son and her dog.
